Efter ett decennium av auktoritärt styre skulle den israeliske premiärministern Benjamin Netanyahus regerande kunna få ett olyckligt slut. Detta efter det chockerande resultatet i det andra valet i landet på ett år.
Under det senaste valet gjorde Bibi stora ansträngningar för att försöka undvika en hotande förlust och säkra sin ställning. DC Insider pratade med Daniel Pipes, ordförande för Middle East Forum, för att få ytterligare perspektiv på den israeliske premiärministerns nuvarande belägenhet.
Varför kandiderar Netanyahu fortfarande till ämbetet?
Han har åtal som hänger över honom och han hoppas kunna undvika dem genom att fortsätta vara premiärminister. Han är nu den israeliske premiärminister som har innehaft ämbetet längst och han hoppas ytterligare kunna befästa sitt arv. Han ser sig själv som den bäste ledaren, i synnerhet när det gäller utrikespolitik och därför har han en mängd olika motiv, både personliga och nationella, för att vilja vara kvar som premiärminister.
Vilka är de möjliga konsekvenserna av detta val? Skulle detta kunna bli tidpunkten för större förändringar i Israel?
Det skulle det mycket väl kunna vara. Jag ser tre möjliga resultat: Det första skulle innebära att någon som för närvarande säger: 'Jag kommer inte att arbeta med Netanyahu' ändrar sig – vilket skulle kunna vara Gantz, Liberman eller Peretz. Om någon av dessa tre går med på att arbeta tillsammans med honom så finns det en majoritetsregering och till en viss utsträckning behåller Netanyahu makten. Detta verkar mindre troligt med Gantz och ännu mindre troligt med Liberman eller Peretz.
Den andra möjligheten är att Likuds parlamentsledamöter avsätter Netanyahu och röstar in någon annan som ledare för partiet, vilket skulle göra det möjligt och mycket lättare för Gantz elller Liberman att förena sig med Likud eftersom de öppet säger att de kan tänka sig att göra det utan Netanyahu och framställer honom som hindret.
Och det sista alternativet är ytterligare ett val. Jag ser egentligen inte några andra alternativ och därför är jag benägen att tro att Likud-ledare kommer att säga till Netanyahu 'Tack för din tjänst men det är dags för oss att välja en ny ledare'.
Till skillnad från tidigare val var det många araber som denna gång skyndade sig till valbåsen för att rösta. Varför denna plötsliga förändring?
Vi ser en ilska mot Netanyahu. "Okay vi ska visa dig..." Det viktigaste när det gäller de arabiska rösterna är att i 70 år har de rösterna, nästan utan undantag, gått till partier och medlemmar som inte vill agera inom den israeliska politiska kontexten och därför har en marginell roll inom det.
Det enda undantag jag kan komma på var 1993 när de arabiska rösterna ledde till antagandet av Oslo-avtalet... Förutom det har de i stort sett varit irrelevanta. Oavsett om det är 10 eller 15 av dem så deltar de helt enkelt inte i det normala arbetet i det israeliska parlamentet. Kanske detta kommer att förändras nu men jag tvivlar på det. Varje gång en arabisk kandidat till parlamentet säger 'Jag skall arbeta för skolor och för lokal säkerhet' så kommer han ingenstans. Om kandidaten säger att han är stor anhängare av den Palestinska Myndigheten eller Hamas och är arg på den israeliska staten, då blir han vald.
Kommer vi att få se en återgång till Oslo-avtalet och hur är det med den palestinska frågan?
Nej. Ingen har några högre tankar om det (Oslo-avtalet) och villkoren där ignoreras i stort sett. Den stora frågan i det senaste valet, det som i synnerhet Liberman har gjort till sitt kärnämne, har ingenting att göra med palestinierna utan med sekulära-religiösa relationer; mer exakt, de ultraortodoxas roll i det israeliska samhället.
Ska de göra militärtjänst, ska de studera engelska och matematik i skolan och så vidare? Detta är den brinnande frågan år 2019. Den Palestinska Myndigheten och Hamas finns där naturligtvis men de är inte huvudfrågan. Såvida inte Trump-planen orsakar uppståndelse ser jag inga större utsikter till förändring.
Vad är senaste nytt om "Århundradets avtal"?
Det ligger formellt på bordet. Netanyahu accepterade det i juni 2009 så det har varit israelisk policy i mer än ett decennium, men det generella antagandet är att han accepterade det under tvång, att han gjorde det endast med ord. Avståndet mellan den Palestinska Myndighetens krav och den israeliska regeringen är avgrundsdjup och utan utsikt till en nära förestående förändring såvida inte Trump-planen orsakar en grundläggande förändring, vilket den skulle kunna göra.
Det talas mycket om Trump-avtalet men inte så mycket om detaljerna i det faktiska avtalet. Jag har anledning att tro att jag kanske känner till dem: Jag tror att det innebär att arabiska stater erkänner Israel och Israel erkänner Palestina. Om så är fallet kommer det att orsaka stor ilska men utan att skapa förutsättningar för förhandlingar mellan Israel och den Palestinska Myndigheten.
Vad ledde fram till Netanyahus möjliga fall?
Hans allvarligaste misstag var att bråka med sina allierade Liberman, Shaked och Bennett. De för sin del klandrar delvis hans fru Sara; hon verkar väcka starka känslor både för och emot och hon kan påverka sin man. Med detta sagt så, trots att många människor aldrig gillat honom och många nu är trötta på honom, stöds han fortfarande av en kärntrupp som är stark och stor och som anser att han gjort ett bra jobb från israelisk nationalistisk synvinkel.
Kommer nästa israeliska premiärminister att följa i sin föregångares spår?
Jag förmodar att Netanyahus efterträdare kommer att mer eller mindre anamma Netanyahus strategi gentemot Trump; vara vad jag kallar för en körpojke – le och säga ja och göra allt för att undvika bråk. Det fungerade för Netanyahu, även om det var smärtsamt för honom.
I synnerhet var Tlaib-Omar-besöket som inte ägde rum tufft för Netanyahu. Han godkände det först och när Trump sedan sade 'släpp inte in dem' så släppte han inte in dem. Detta var förödmjukande och det skadade relationerna med det Demokratiska partiet, men Netanyahu beslöt att upprätthållandet av goda relationer med Trump hade högsta prioritet och gick med på det. Jag föreställer mig att Gantz eller vem som helst som kommer efter honom, kommer att göra detsamma.
