Bar-Asher, professor i Islamiska studier vid Hebrew University i Jerusalem tar sig an en de mest känsliga och subtila frågorna om religiös historia och aktuell politik i denna tunna men fullspäckade bok: vilken plats har judarna i koranen? (Innan vi går vidare, notera att han ignorerar den mäktiga revisionistiska historien och begränsar sig till endast den alltmer misskrediterade konventionella historien).
Till att börja med går Bar-Asher igenom judiskt liv i Arabien före koranen och drar slutsatsen att det i princip inte finns någon pålitlig information tillgänglig. När han tittar på den islamiska skriften finner han att "bilden av judar och judendomen som framträder i koranen varierar beroende på om det som avses är de bibliska hebréerna eller Muhammeds samtida". För att förenkla, de förra hyllas och de senare fördöms. (I detta ser man en tidig version av det nutida fenomenet "människor älskar döda judar").
Fördelaktiga koranverser framställer judar som det utvalda folket eller som de israeliter som drog ut från Egypten och anlände till det Förlovade landet eller de som tog emot Torahn. Ofördelaktiga verser fokuserar på avgudadyrkan som Bar-Asher kallar "påtagliga bevis för hebréernas och sedan judarnas förkastning av monoteism"; på det märkliga påståendet i koranen att judar tror att Uzayur är en profet eller till och med Guds son; eller på förtalet att judar mördade sina egna profeter.
Sammantaget gav en "övergripande negativ syn på judarna en grund för att delegitimera och förringa dem". Föga förvånande "ges den hårda kritik som riktas mot bibelns hebréer i koranen och sedan mot judarna i senare generationer ett större utrymme än dess positiva bedömningar".
Väl medveten om deras samtida roll kommenterar Bar-Asher att koranverserna "kan bli 'explosiva' när de avsiktligt tas ur sitt sammanhang för att kunna användas mot våra dagars judar och kristna" och han ger ett antal exempel.
Författaren tar också upp en rad andra fascinerande ämnen såsom koranens djupa ambivalenta förhållande till bibeln; passagen "förvandlade till apor och grisar"; behandlingen av bibliska berättelser i koranen; en jämförelse av lagar i judendomen och koranen; och hur sunniter och shiamuslimer historiskt har sett på judar. Bar-Asher har skrivit en liten pärla.
